Measuring The Universe

Measuring The Universe is a Mayes Creative project inspired by the story of the international measurement of the 1769 Transit of Venus, resulting in the first measurement of the distance from the earth to the sun and therefore the size of the known universe.
Measuring The Universe: A product of Justin Wiggan and Joanna Mayes' residency with SWCTN/Porthmeor Studios.
A reimagining of Holst's The Planets Suite by Justin Wiggan created to accompany the film experiments made during the residency.
Additional funding for the Tates St Ives Winter Festival/Porthmeor Event from Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England and Feast.

Below are sample experiments with Joanna Mayes' digitised caffenol hand processed film, with overlaid analogue found footage. Justin also experimented with layering 'voice shadow' experiments, where we took voice recordings of the names of the planets and removed all but the edges of the sounds.

Walking The Universe
Sounds taken from NASA's Voyager recordings made whilst exploring the planets.
