Boscastle - Creative Residency for Artists and Makers. A fantastic opportunity to spend time with like-minded people in the inspiring location of Boscastle on the dramatic north Cornwall Coast. This fascinating opportunity is curated to inspire art practitioners, researchers and thinkers alike.
We are excited to invite you to apply to join us for a captivating artist residency in the picturesque coastal village of Boscastle, Cornwall. Located on the dramatic North Cornwall Coast, Boscastle offers a unique setting of access to both the coast and Bodmin Moor, allowing you to immerse yourself in creativity, inspired by the themes of the moon, myths, and magical seas, while surrounded by the area's rich heritage.
Residency Overview
Set within Boscastle YHA, a charming location steeped in character and natural beauty, the residency provides access to breathtaking coastal landscapes, folklore, and the mesmerizing power of the sea. Participants are encouraged to explore their artistic or research practice in this inspiring environment, surrounded by like-minded creatives.
We welcome practitioners across all art forms, as well as researchers to take part in this immersive experience. Whether you are a painter, writer, sculptor, photographer, or academic, this residency offers time, space, and inspiration to dive deeply into your practice.
Themes
During this residency, we will delve into the magical narratives of the Cornish coast, focusing on watching the moon, local ancient sites, folklore, and the rich stories shaped by the area's stunning seascapes and moorland. Boscastle’s history and unique surroundings make it a perfect place to explore connections between art, nature, and local folklore and history.
Residency Environment
The Boscastle YHA offers communal living spaces and opportunities for creative exchange. With indoor and outdoor work areas, it is an ideal venue for collaboration or focused individual research. The residency is designed with a relaxed atmosphere, allowing participants to choose how they engage with the program and their creative pursuits.

This residency will be led by Dr Joanna Mayes and Carolyn Kennett FRAS.
Joanna Mayes will be bringing:
*16mm & standard 8 cameras
* Alternative/plant film development & tinting skills/research interest and phytogram materials
* Simple developer materials – coffee, washing soda, vitamin C
Carolyn Kennett will be bringing:
* Expertise in ecology, astronomy and ancient sites (we will also be thinking about properties of materials, cycles, alignments and the story of human engagement with sky and landscapes)
* Naked eye and telescope star-watching
Outcomes
Participants are encouraged to share their work through our online platforms, with an optional opportunity to feature on the Mayes Creative website.

Fees
Prices include accommodation for four nights, access to all facilities, and optional program activities.
Application Details
Spaces are limited, and applications will be reviewed on artistic merit, and alignment with the residency theme. If all spaces are not filled after the initial call, a second round of applications will be announced.

Residency Highlights
- Amazing land and seascape: Boscastle it at the confluence of three rivers, with steep cliffs, craggy coastline and plentiful wildlife – birds, sealife and flora.
- Ancient Inspirations: Tintagel Castle, with it’s amazing walkway; we share recent research into the bronze age people who lived there. Rocky Valley visit, with its heritage rock art labyrinths.
- Ancient Inspirations: Hendra Burnick cupmark stone, highlighted under moonlight: the most decorated megalithic site with rockart in the south west UK.
- Ancient Inspirations: Explore Bodmin Moor’s prehistoric landscapes and Bronze Age remains.
- Star Stories: Join evening moon and stargazing sessions and learn from Carolyn Kennett about Cornwall’s connections to the stars.
- Flexible Schedule: Activities are optional, giving you the freedom to immerse yourself in your personal practice.

Practicalities
- Accommodation: Shared rooms in the YHA (gender-segregated; one person per bunk bed).
- Food: A self-catering kitchen is available, with local shops and eateries nearby.
- Activities: A mix of group explorations, talks, and individual time for personal practice. Visits include walk along coast to Pentargon waterfall, Tintagel and onto Bodmin Moor to visit a stone circle, (schedule details to follow).
- Transport: There is a regular bus from Bodmin Parkway GWR; on previous residencies some participants have chosen to share a taxi or lift share – this can be discussed at our pre-residency zoom meeting.
- Covid-19: All residency activities will adhere to current regulations and guidelines.
Fees
- Full price: £325 per person (shared accommodation).
- Non-residential price: £275 per person (for those arranging their own accommodation).
- Concessionary rate: £179 (two places available, selected based on need and application).
