Take a trip through Victorian times to explore the extraordinary links between
Okehampton and Dartmoor
The Inspiration
Destination Dartmoor takes the excitement and interest in the remarkable reopening of the mainline Okehampton Station after nearly 50 years, to raise the profile of the fascinating heritage made accessible through this new sustainable route into Dartmoor.
The engineering heritage surrounding the Dartmoor line is extraordinary. We research and share the amazing skills behind the building and running of this railway, especially the work of Victorian engineer Galbraith who designed the wrought Iron Meldon Viaduct, one of two remaining Scheduled Iron Railway bridges. We also foreground the story of Meldon Quarry, glassworks and cottages as attractions of the new railway service via the accessible Granite Way trail.
We also enjoy the story of bygone night trains – and demonstrate how we can travel out of towns and experience Dartmoor’s winter early stars and dark skies heritage by train; we highlight issues of light pollution, hoping to support the move for sympathetic lighting.
There's lots going on in the lead up to the re-opening of the Dartmoor station. Stay tuned for events and artistic works in response to the project.
