Unique immersive workshopsFriday 22nd - Sunday 24th September 2017
Choose one of the following pathways: Full Weekend Price: £35 voice workshop & events, £35 dance/movement workshop & events, £55 film workshop & events (includes all materials) Singular workshops/events priced separately below (excl. camping/accommodation) This weekend offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in an amazing landscape - high up on Bodmin Moor and by The Hurlers stone circles – using it as inspiration for your creative practice. OVERVIEW..... Research into The Hurlers, a stone circle up on Bodmin Moor, suggests they align with the positions and movements of the sun and stars. Our immersive weekend is taking place around the Autumnal Equinox, when special alignments happen with the rising sun. It is, therefore, a perfect place to consider our current and historic relationship with those stars and planets. And to extend the opportunity to family and friends, there are a number of open workshops and events that they can join in too; all wrapped up by Brian Sheen, a local astronomy expert, who will help us try and get to the bottom of why the stones are there. PLUS! We will be staying at Cheesewring Farm, with only a gate between ourselves and the open moor! Participants can join the camp for £6/night or stay elsewhere and book in for events and workshops as below: PROFESSIONAL WORKSHOPS Handmade Film: Framing the Prehistoric With visiting international tutor Robert Schaller Saturday 23rd Sept 10am – 5.30pm Venue: Cheeswring Farm, Minions, Cornwall PL14 5LJ and on the moor The Neolithics created reflections and alignments of the night sky. What techniques can we use to approach these ideas through filmmaking? Robert will share his experience of wilderness filmmaking and the ways in which this approach reframes our experiences and creative work. The course will incorporate working with analogue film cameras and reversal hand processing. Bring your favourite 16mm/8mm film camera (some equipment available by request) £40 individual (incl. 16mm film, chemistry & evening meal), or £55 weekend ticket (either one day workshop plus all events, excl. accommodation). Institutional rates: £60 workshop/£80 weekend ticket Some concessionary/travel bursaries available, please contact for details Please note: Robert is also running an earlier 1 day workshop (Low Tech FIlmmaking - tips and tricks for working without lots of kit) on 22nd Sept 2017 which can be added to the above or taken instead. Please see our film workshops page for details. Presented in association with Cinestar. Immersive Voice and Movement Workshops These unique parallel workshops bring voice and movement together, to facilitate a creative response to the ancient site of The Hurlers stone circles on Bodmin Moor, through guided tasks and improvisations. We will have two groups: one voice, and one movement group; each working towards a public sharing on the Sunday, as part of our Singing Up the Stones sonic test at The Hurlers. This work is experimental in nature – risky and fun, working outdoors anything can (and often does) happen! Both groups will work flexibly, sometimes separately, sometimes together, sometimes indoors and sometimes onsite. We will find new inspirations and responses, sonic and choreographic connections, creating a shared score inspired by the site and each other. There will be an introduction to the site’s history and astrological alignments by Brian Sheen from Roseland Observatory. Movement workshop with Lois Taylor Saturday 10am – 5.30pm & Sunday 10am – 1pm Sharing of work made/Singing Up the Hurlers sound test: Sunday 2pm – 3pm Venue: Village Hall, Upton Cross, Cornwall PL14 5AN and on the moor £20 for both, or £35 weekend ticket (all events, Fri food, excl. accommodation). Handmade Film Robert Schaller is the director of the Handmade Film Institute in Colorado, USA and runs the renowned Wilderness Filmmaking Camps around the world. Robert received his MFA at the University of Colorado with Stan Brakhage and Phil Solomon. His creative life and teaching combine an extensive early background in science with studies of music composition, ancient languages (Latin and Greek), philosophy, and experimental filmmaking, along with a love of the wild. In filmmaking he has found a potent intersection of the tactile and ephemeral, making it a perfect medium for addressing humanity's relationship to the material world. We are working with analogue film; no experience necessary, just let us know if you need to share a camera. Voice and Movement Voice: Gerry Hillman - Gerry is a landscape artist with a passion for music. For 30 years, he has led choirs and acapella singing groups and arranged scores, encouraging people to enjoy their voice and the experience of singing together. In the voice workshop we will have some fun playing with harmonies, rhythm and sound to create an ensemble choral score to share on the Sunday at The Hurlers. We will collaborate with the dancers so that some of this work can provide a soundscape for their movement. Movement: Lois Taylor – Lois is a highly-experienced dance artist and choreographer known for her creative explorations of movement within the landscape. After a guided warm up dancers will be led through tasks to find their own responses through movement which will be choreographed as a loose improvisational structure in and with the site and sound score. Please note the outside work will be on uneven rough ground. We want to work outside as much as possible so come prepared with rough clothing, layers, waterproofs and sun cream. www.loistaylor.co.uk Gerry and Lois both live close to The Hurlers and have a unique perspective to share on creating work in this location. If you would like to ask further questions re the sessions, contact Lois 07730586306 and Gerry 07754106271 |
