Walking The Universe

Walking The Universe: Falmouth Maritime Museum 21st February 2020

After exploring the sea, man turned his attention to the sky. Join us as we discover, via a special Museum trail, how scientists, astronomers and Captain Cook all embarked on a mission to answer the question, how big is the Universe?

Trail
The trails start at 11.30, 1.30 and 3.30, meeting in the Museum’s Main Hall. Each tour lasts an hour.

Offering a special tour around the Museum, we will explain how Venus and the Sun helped answer this enormous question over 250 years ago.
On your journey around the Solar System you’ll uncover some of the mysteries of the Universe and see how travel by sea led to a better understanding of space.

Make and Take
Saturday 22 & Sunday 23 February, 12pm – 3.30pm.
Unleash your inner astronomer in our Make and Take workshops as we create a planisphere, telescope or rocket.

It’s free!
The Transit of Venus activities are FREE as part of the Museum’s annual admission fee. Pay once and get in free for a year.

There will also be a special installation of live sound and visuals in the Learning Centre, at the end of the trail, by Joanna Mayes and Justin Wiggan, sharing work produced as part of their Measuring The Universe Residency at Porthmeor Studios, with SWCTN.

Walking The Universe: Porthmeor Studios 22nd November 2019

Come and learn about your place in the universe. A meeting between art and science. As part of our investigations into the first international measurement of the size of the solar system, we have been making creative investigations into this intriguing connection, as part of our South West Creative Technology Network residency at Porthmeor Studios. Please join us for a walk and talk about what we're working on during the residency.

Talk and Walk
13:00 Join us for a talk by the artists, joined by heritage astronomer Carolyn Kennett
13:30 Walking The Universe - Come and immerse yourself in the physical experience of distance through walking! Explore the relative distances of the solar system through the streets of St Ives with artists Joanna Mayes and Justin Wiggan, with astronomer Carolyn Kennett, as part of their SWCTN/Porthmeor Studios Residency
14:45 join us for tea and a chat with the artists in the Borlase Smart Room, Porthmeor Studios.

These events is also part of the wider Mayes Creative Measuring The Universe project, celebrating the intriguing Cornish connection to the 1769 observation of the Transit of Venus. In this 250th anniversary year we share the story of Bradley at Lizard Lighthouse and Cornwall’s Hitchens at Greenwich Observatory.
