The Story of Steam - celebrating West Cornwall's contribution to railway innovation
The Story of Steam in West Cornwall
We are excited to be starting out on a new project - the Story of Steam, inspired by the 200 year anniversary of the first public passenger railway and West Cornwall's part in this story. We start by celebrating the opening of the first passenger railway on 27th September with a community event at Hayle Railway Station. Harvey's Carriages, owned and managed by Rail Holidays, are opening their carriage doors for an open day - we bring community printmaking, badge making and heritage sharing. The amazing Murdoch Flyer will also be in attendance (a full sized working model of Murdoch's steam engine), sharing an important part of the story of steam innovation in Cornwall.
We are especially keen to hear from people with memories of Hayle and Helston Railways, as we hope to be following up with Oral History recording if we are successful in our bid for funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. We are fortunate to already have funding from the GWR Community Fund to support this event and also a programme of creative activities in schools and libraries along the path of the Hayle Railway, which will come together to create an inspiring Poster Wall outside Hayle Day Centre for us all to enjoy. Please join our mailing list to be kept informed about future activities, or keep your eye on our social media for updates.
