#Seventeen Suns
An exciting new Social Media project, led by St Ives artist Peter Beeson, celebrating the start of the new Solar Cycle. We focus on Swiss astronomer Schwabe, whose 17 years of daily observations of the Sun led to the discovery of the solar cycle, through sunspot activity. Beeson will be making 17 daily observations of the sun and asking other artists to join him, sharing the results on instagram using the hashtag #seventeensuns. You can also see the daily feed on our webpage by clicking here.

Peter Beeson at Lizard Wireless Station
Peter Beeson, our artist in residence at Lizard Wireless Station in association with the National Trust, is now sharing the drawings we commissioned as part of our Lizard Beacons project. The drawings will be on display at the Wireless Station until September 23rd and are available as free postcards from National Trust and other community locations around the Lizard. These postcards celebrate the important contribution made by Marconi's work on the Lizard - all part of our celebration of the special communications anniversaries on the Lizard in 2019.
Also on display at Lizard Point Carpark is a banner sharing the work created by local artists at a drawing workshop at the Wireless Station, as part of Peter's residency. Thanks again to Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England, Feast and Big Lottery for supporting this project. Special thanks to the volunteers at Lizard Wireless Station, Lizard Point and the Marconi Centre who hosted visiting schools and artists. Exhibition: Saturday 20th July 2019

Black holes, Neutron Stars and Gamma Ray Bursts.....
WE ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO LEARN MORE about the world we live in, through creative exploration. Our next phase moves into the exciting territory of deep space astronomy and Cosmic Rays....
Phase 2 We have been working with ideas inspired by Deep Space and Cosmic Rays in particular, with funding support from Arts Council England, Cornwall Industrial Trust and Feast. Software Cornwall are partnering with us to deliver exciting science and technology engagement opportunities for artists which will be announced shortly! Watch out for these amazing opportunities in your area. The Meteor: film pod on tour...
Our Meteor: Film Pod had its first outing, at Cornwall Film Festival last year, landing at Falmouth Moor, surprising (and so we hear, delighting...) passers by. Our initial concept of a dry space to share films from our Deep Time Film Call has been expanded into an amazing sculpture, created by artists Andrew Bird and Christina Romero-Cross, which lends the idea of a meteor coming to earth. Artist Jo Mayes and creative technologist Ben Chew have been working on extending our mini cosmic ray detector into being able to control video and sound, creating a dynamic installation which responds to the presence of cosmic rays as they hit our atmosphere! The Rays were with us and successfully controlled the film and sound, with excellent feedback about the way in which we managed to work across art and science in an engaging way. Success! Thanks to all involved for making this a reality - including everyone who helped move the pod in and out of position (including the police escort but that's another story!!).
Find out more about the story of the amazing film pod here! Our portable film environment is now taking on the second leg of it's tour around Cornwall. In March we visited the Secondary Schools STEM fair at the Royal Cornwall Showground (supported by Cornwall Council and Feast), then headed to Penzance to share the pod with Pensans & Nancealverne Schools (supported by local Cornwall Councillor Tim Dwelly's Community Chest Fund) before heading to Lizard Point YHA, via Mullion School, in the following week... We had a fantastic time with some exciting transport moments along the way! Thanks once again to Arts Council England, Feast and the Cornwall Industrial Trust for making the whole project possible.
100ft of Deep Time: Filmmakers' screenings - ongoing
Inside the pod we screen our 100ft of Deep Time films (commissioned with support from LUX and Plymouth University), created by artists Aoife Desmond, James Holcombe, Melanie King, Rob Gawthrop & Jo Millett , Michael Eddy, Rachael Allain, Karen Abadie and Stuart Moore. Details here.
The playback of the films is controlled by our new cosmic ray detector, changing the playback from single screen to triptych and activating a different musical loop each time (created by Michelson Morley as part of our Deep Space project).
